Al Karaana Lagoon in Qatar attracts diverse species of migratory birds
Qatar has ramped up its efforts in protecting migratory birds by continuously building greeneries and natural reserves to ensure its safe habitat. This has also resulted in an increase in the number of migratory birds passing through the country due to the effective establishment of environmental laws.
Al Karaana Lagoon is among the environmental projects of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), which has emerged as a major habitat for diverse birds and fish species. The lagoon also serves as a green rest stop with accessible clean water for migratory birds flocking over the country.
Migratory birds that can be found in the lagoon include Osprey, Water pipit, Purple Heron, Kestrel, and many more.
With an aim to protect and enhance the Qatari environment, the area was rehabilitated and transformed into a wildlife habitat that is suitable for various species of birds and fishes.
The project is also an important nod to the collective efforts of the concerned entities to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 in the field of environmental sustainability. This is also a significant step in protecting the country's environmental heritage and contributing to its prosperity.
To date, the measures taken by authorities prompted positive results in terms of an increase in a number of birds and wild animals.
The Al Karaana Lagoon is situated 60 km southwest of Doha (Qatar).
